At the recent MWC Shanghai, China Mobile talked up the prospects for two new consumer 5G services. One is a cloud phone, launched last month. With the applications, operating system, and processing all in the cloud, a device that costs a few thousand yuan can compete with high-end phones, according to Li Bin, vice president of China Mobile Internet.

Cloud phones can be “tailored” to meet the needs of different user groups, such as mass users, gamers, streamers, etc., Bin said.

The second service is a new take on VoNR (Voice over New Radio) on 5G networks, which will improve the voice calling experience. It will integrate other applications into a phone call, such as real-time translation or remote guidance. The service is backed by the GSM Association (GSMA) and two Chinese manufacturers.

The first trials took place in June and nationwide commercial deployment is expected by the end of the year, according to Bian Yannan, deputy director of China Mobile's planning and construction department.

According to LightReading, this is not the first time the telecommunications industry has tried to upgrade a traditional service. More than a year ago, Chinese carriers tried to do it with 5G messaging, turning one-way SMS messages into multimedia services but failed.

In addition to the above two services, China Mobile will focus on deploying intelligent base stations for 5G private networks. In 2024, the company will research and introduce emergency information services for the community, multicast data transmission, etc.

China Mobile recently joined the establishment of the Virtual Space Industry Alliance with 24 members, including AI video company iFlytek, Huawei and Xiaomi. The carrier said that investment in virtual space will double in the next three years.

Huawei: 5G helps people change their lives Huawei and Chinese carriers pledge to support the state in developing 5G because of its ability to change people's lives.
