What's happening in German politics?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/11/2024

The Guardian reported that after a meeting with government members on November 6, Mr. Scholz decided to dismiss Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is the Chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

The German government currently consists of a coalition of members from Chancellor Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens and the FDP. The impact of Lindner's removal was immediate, as the FDP announced it was withdrawing its ministers from the cabinet, signaling the end of the three-way coalition after months of disagreement.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaks at a press conference on November 6.

Speaking on television on November 6, Mr. Scholz said that he had asked Minister Lindner to present a plan to reduce energy costs, promote investment and maintain support for Ukraine, but Mr. Lindner showed no desire to accept.

“The situation is very serious. There is war in Europe, tensions in the Middle East. At the same time, our economy is stagnant. We need to invest significantly more in defense and the armed forces, especially after the results of the US election,” Mr. Scholz said.

The German leader accused Mr Lindner of selfishness, refusing to compromise and using “narrow party political tactics” at a time of growing uncertainty. Last week, Finance Minister Lindner made a demand that the government rewrite almost its entire budget for next year.

Mr. Christian Lindner accused Chancellor Scholz of “failing to realize that the country needs an economic awakening” and “underestimating people's economic concerns.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he planned to call a confidence vote in parliament in January, and based on the vote results consider holding a general election in March, earlier than the original September date.

German government insiders note that Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election may require greater unity among the German government’s parties. However, discord and animosity in Berlin show no signs of abating.
