VnExpressVnExpress12/05/2023

Ho Chi Minh City, Ngan discovered that bilateral ovarian tumors had recurred 5 years after tumor removal. She had to undergo laparoscopic surgery to remove the tumor and preserve her reproductive function.

On May 12, Dr. Nguyen Ba My Nhi, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the surgical team performed a rare ovarian tumor recurrence on Ms. Ngan, 20 years old, District 12. The girl has never been married or had children, and had surgery to remove dermoid cysts on both ovaries at the age of 15. Now the tumor has recurred on both sides, threatening her reproductive function.

Before that, Ngan went to a hospital for a health check-up and accidentally discovered a tumor on her right ovary measuring 45x45x55 mm and a tumor on her left ovary measuring 18x16x22 mm. Her family took Ngan to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for treatment.

"Ngan was lucky to discover the tumor recurrence when it was still small, so treatment and removal were easy, causing little damage to the ovary," Dr. Cuong explained.

The biopsy result was a benign ovarian dermoid cyst. According to Dr. Huy Cuong - Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, this cyst is common in women aged 20-30 years old. They usually appear on one side of the ovary. Cases appearing on both sides like Ngan's are rare, dangerous because the risk is doubled. The cyst can rupture when impacted strongly, twist the ovary, and can develop into cancer...

Ovarian dermoid cysts are likely to recur if surgery misses the tumor. In addition, women with gynecological diseases, hormonal disorders, adnexal infections, abnormal ovarian cysts, endometriosis... also develop ovarian tumors.

The disease usually has no warning signs. The disease is mostly detected during a gynecological examination or cesarean section. If the tumor is large, there will be obvious signs such as: irregular menstruation, abdominal pain, pain during sex...

Women with a history of ovarian cyst removal surgery need to have their health monitored regularly after surgery. At the same time, women can prevent the risk of recurrence by limiting the use of stimulants, fatty foods, exercising, maintaining weight, and balancing hormones.
