Announcement of the book Literature as a Discourse by Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Toan

(CLO) Recently, the University of Education Publishing House has launched the literary work of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Toan entitled "Literature as a Discourse" (M. Foucault's Discourse Theory and Vietnamese Literary History) which the author has persistently researched for 17 years.

This is a detailed, elaborate and topical research work that aims to provide a new approach to literature. In this book, the author focuses on the life and scientific career of Foucault, describing M. Foucault's discourse theory with specialized research tools and operations.

In particular, the practice of discourse analysis focused on in-depth research on a number of discourses in modern Vietnamese literature in order to find new interpretations of a number of phenomena in Vietnamese literature, aiming to solve a number of problems in the history of Vietnamese literature.

Launch of the literary book — Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Toan - Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Literature, Hanoi National University of Education.

The project is structured into 3 main parts:

Part 1: Discourse Theory and Literary Studies - Theoretical Issues: Reconstructs Foucault's academic portrait and provides a theoretical framework for discourse analysis in general as well as discusses the relationship between discourse analysis and literary studies.

Part 2: Discourse theory and issues of Vietnamese literary history: Deeply analyze the power/knowledge correlation between colonial subjects and colonial subjects through the discourse on identity and the other; Analyze the power correlation on gender and its consequences in literary life from the Middle Ages to 1945; Raise the issue of literary institutions and their impacts on creative activities in the history of Vietnamese literature from the Middle Ages to modern times.

Part 3: Colors of discourse with 9 independent articles, the articles cover many fields and topics. The operations, concepts and tools of discourse analysis in these articles are used interwoven with other operations and skills of literary analysis.

At the event, Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher Tran Dinh Su commented on the work: "Literature as a discourse is a valuable contribution not only to the field of Vietnamese literary research, to literary historians, but also to literary theory."

Meanwhile, Associate Professor, Dr. La Khac Hoa affirmed that Literature as a Discourse by Tran Van Toan can be considered an "unprecedented" treatise, from its content and approach to the research object.

"In terms of content, this is a work of literary history research. The history of Vietnamese literature from the Middle Ages to the present is the author's main subject of contemplation and the story is placed at the center of the thesis. This subject is approached mainly through Michel Foucault's discourse theory," Associate Professor, Dr. La Khac Hoa affirmed.

According to the Pedagogical University Publishing House, Literature as a Discourse (M. Foucault's Discourse Theory and Vietnamese Literary History) is published to serve the research and teaching of literature in universities and high schools.
Hopefully this will be a useful research document, opening up many research directions not only in the field of literature but also in other scientific fields because M. Foucault's discourse theory "is not only for literature".
