According to The Verge , the developer Niantic behind the popular Pokémon Go game has announced a partnership with Capcom to create a game based on the Monster Hunter brand . Accordingly, the new game is called Monster Hunter Now and still follows the traditional gameplay of the game series of hunting monsters, but its special feature will be bringing the hunting experience into augmented reality (AR) technology right in the real world , an extremely famous expertise of Niantic.

Niantic is making a real-world monster hunting game

Specific details about the new game are still pretty vague, with Niantic saying more information will be revealed when the closed beta launches in the near future, but it looks like Monster Hunter Now will follow the familiar Monster Hunter formula. Specifically, creatures from outer space will invade the human world and players can encounter them right on the real-world map.

Players will hunt monsters and collect the necessary materials to craft and upgrade weapons and armor. Continuous combat is a core element of Monster Hunter games, but Monster Hunter Now will only put players in short battles of about 75 seconds, instead of the long, tiring confrontation with monsters like console games.

“We wanted to make the combat element simple and intuitive, but still have a level of difficulty that players have to experience and master,” Sakae Osumi, senior producer at Niantic in Tokyo, explained in a press conference.

Following the massive success of Pokémon Go , Niantic has partnered with some notable names for real-world games, with projects like NBA All-World and Pikmin Bloom , and shuttered projects like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite . However, none of the games have been as successful as Pokémon, and last June Niantic shut down several projects in development and laid off 8% of its staff.

The developer is also working on a virtual pet game called Peridot, which is expected to launch in May.

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter remains as popular a gaming franchise as ever, with 2018's Monster Hunter: World becoming Capcom's best-selling game ever.
