Former Prime Minister Hun Sen elected to the Cambodian Senate

Cambodia's National Election Committee announced on March 5 that the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 55 of the 58 seats elected in the Senate in February, with former Prime Minister Hun Sen winning one seat. The remaining three seats went to the opposition Khmer Will Party, according to AFP.

Four political parties, including the CPP, the royalist Funcinpec party and two small opposition parties, participated in the election.

The CPP said it would nominate Hun Sen as president of the Senate when it convenes in April. The president of the Senate would act as head of state when the king is abroad.

Cambodia's Senate has 62 seats, of which 58 are elected by 125 lawmakers and more than 11,000 local leaders. King Norodom Sihamoni appoints two while the National Assembly appoints the remaining two.

Former Prime Minister Hun Sen's youngest son becomes Cambodia's youngest Deputy Prime Minister

Mr. Hun Sen stepped down as prime minister last year but remained as CPP chairman. Mr. Hun Sen's eldest son, Hun Manet, was elected prime minister after a general election in July of the same year.

In February, the Cambodian National Assembly elected Mr. Hun Many, younger brother of Prime Minister Hun Manet, as the 11th deputy prime minister. According to the Khmer Times , Mr. Hun Many (42 years old) is Cambodia's youngest deputy prime minister ever.
