"Putin has so little respect for Obama that he started talking about nuclear. You heard it. Nuclear. Today, he started talking about nuclear weapons," Trump said on the evening of March 2 in Richmond.

The crowd reportedly fell silent when Mr Trump mentioned Mr Obama, who left office more than seven years ago. It was the third time Mr Trump has made a similar mistake in the past six months, including when he confused Republican rival Nikki Haley with former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Ms. Haley, 52, the only remaining candidate challenging Mr. Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, has always portrayed herself as the younger alternative, while Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden are the grumpy old men in their campaign ads.

Mr Trump's slip of the tongue comes a day after Mr Biden also confused Ukraine with Gaza.

“In the coming days, we will join our friends in Jordan and others who are working to get food and supplies into Ukraine,” Biden said on March 1. He added that the US would “look to open up other pathways into Ukraine, possibly including a maritime corridor.”

A White House official later clarified that Mr Biden was referring to Gaza, not Ukraine.

The latest New York Times/Siena College poll found that 73% of voters surveyed believe Mr. Biden is too old to be effective as president, including 61% of those who voted for him in 2020.

Voters, meanwhile, seemed less concerned about Mr Trump, who is four years younger than Mr Biden. Just 42% of respondents said Mr Trump was “too old” to be an effective president.
