In 1306, Princess Huyen Tran was married to the King of Champa, Che Man, in exchange for the land of Chau O and Chau Ly (from Quang Tri to Quang Nam today). Legend has it that when the wedding procession reached the north of today's Hieu River, they boarded a boat to enter Do Ban citadel - the capital of Champa. She asked the wedding procession to stop, reorganize the formation, set up an altar, bow to the North once more to say goodbye to her father, say goodbye to her homeland and country, and board the boat to become a bride in a foreign land. Moved by Princess Huyen Tran's filial piety, the people and soldiers named the section of the river where she set up the altar as Hieu River.

Offering incense to commemorate Princess Huyen Tran at the beginning of the new year is a meaningful activity, demonstrating the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source", remembering and showing gratitude for the contributions of our ancestors in expanding the territory.
