Chinese football team causes chaos in Asian Cup 1

VTC NewsVTC News21/02/2025

The AFC Champions League Elite (AFC C1) became complicated when Shandong Taishan (China) unexpectedly withdrew from the tournament right before the final round of the qualifying round. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as well as Shandong Taishan's opponents were also in turmoil.

Specifically, AFC will be responsible for advertising and television partners when the match between Ulsan HD and Shandong Taishan was canceled 2 hours before kick-off. AFC is working on it and it is likely that the Chinese team will have to compensate for many losses related to advertising, sponsorship as well as the reputation of the tournament.

In addition to the sponsorship issue, the AFC also has to deal with the technical problems of the tournament. Shandong Taishan's withdrawal forced the AFC to cancel the results of all the matches that the team had previously participated in. Teams that won or drew with Shandong Taishan suffered losses.

The AFC Champions League Elite East Zone standings have been very volatile. For example, Pohang Steelers lost 2-5 to Johor Darul Tazim (Malaysia) in the final round. They finished the group stage with 9 points, just enough to advance to the quarterfinals in 8th place. However, the Korean representative won against Shandong Taishan and was deducted 3 points, leaving them with only 6 points.

Shanghai Port (China) only has 8 points, so they automatically surpass and have a ticket to the next round.

Shandong Taishan FC posted a statement explaining their decision to withdraw from the tournament. The Chinese team said their players had “serious health problems.” Shandong Taishan’s medical team confirmed that the team did not have enough players to compete.
