Once an ally and official in the administration of former US President Donald Trump, Ms. Nikki Haley has now announced that she will not run for vice president if Mr. Trump is nominated as the Republican presidential candidate.
"I don't want to be anybody's vice president. There's no debate about that. This is their game and I'm not going to play it. I don't want to be vice president," Haley told voters in New Hampshire on January 19.
Haley is the former governor of South Carolina and also served as the US ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump administration. However, they are currently on opposite sides of the race to become the Republican candidate for the US presidency in 2024.
Ms. Haley is currently one of the four main candidates of the Republican Party. In the first Republican primary election held on January 15 in Iowa, Ms. Haley ranked third, behind Mr. Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
After his landslide victory in Iowa, Trump urged Haley and DeSantis to drop out to avoid wasting time and resources. However, Haley rejected Trump’s arguments and continued to prepare for the second primary election in New Hampshire on January 23.
Observers say Mr. Trump is almost certain to win the Republican nomination. The public's attention is now on who he will choose to run as his vice president.
Sputnik has listed several leading candidates for the position besides Ms. Haley, such as famous former Fox News host Tucker Carlson and technology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy - a candidate who recently withdrew from the race.
