The win gives Sweden their fifth appearance in the last four and another chance to win the tournament.

In the previous four times, Sweden had reached the final once but lost to Germany, and had finished third three times.

Sweden's next opponent on the journey to conquer the first Women's World Cup trophy will be the Spanish women's team. The match will take place on August 15 at Eden Park Stadium, New Zealand.

In the match that just ended, Sweden was the team with a huge advantage when they took a 2-0 lead after 51 minutes of play thanks to goals from Amanda Ilestedt and Filippa Angeldal.

However, the drama was pushed up a notch when substitute player Honoka Hayashi scored to shorten the score to 1-2 for Japan in the 88th minute.

Honoka Hayashi's goal boosted Japan's spirits. They put on a lot of pressure in the 10 minutes of stoppage time but unfortunately there were no more goals.
