The incident happened at Fronhof, a market in the city center that also houses a music stage. Police were alerted shortly after the incident.

Police in the nearby city of Duesseldorf said a large-scale operation had been launched to find the suspect, who is on the run, adding that a “large area” had been cordoned off.

The attacker “stabbed people indiscriminately with a knife,” Bild reported. Heavily armed SEK units and around 40 special vehicles from across North Rhine-Westphalia have been deployed to Solingen. Medical teams are trying to save the lives of nine people, DW reported.

The festival was part of a series of events to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the founding of the city of Solingen. Following the attack, the city of Solingen completely canceled the 650th anniversary celebration and related events.

According to the event’s website, the festival will last for three days, starting on August 23. The event will feature music , street theater, and variety shows in the city center and other areas. An estimated 75,000 visitors are expected to attend the festival.

Solingen Mayor Tim-Oliver Kurzbach said the city was shocked and saddened by the incident. He thanked the emergency services who responded quickly to the scene, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Solingen has a population of around 160,000. It is located near the major cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf in Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia. On social media X, North Rhine-Westphalia's state premier, Hendrik Wuest, condemned the brutal violence against the community and expressed his support for the people of Solingen, especially the victims and their families.
