Authorities in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have culled tens of thousands of poultry after detecting the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus at three poultry farms.

Germany: Destroyed tens of thousands of poultry infected with H5N1

Worst affected was a turkey farm, the second outbreak of bird flu on the farm this year.

During the first outbreak in March, the farm had to destroy 17,000 chickens. The current outbreak has killed 25,000 birds. Like the H3N8 strain (also known as equine influenza), the H5N1 strain has been detected in humans.

However, current research suggests that the virus cannot be transmitted from person to person. Last year, Europe experienced its most severe bird flu season in history.

According to the European Union authorities, from October 2021 to September 2022, a total of 50 million poultry were destroyed due to virus infection.
