After 4 matches of the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, FIFA has issued a total of 27 penalties, of which the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has the most with 4 penalties. Before the match with the Chinese team (October 15) in Qingdao - China, the Indonesian team arrived late, causing the match to be postponed. As a result, PSSI was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (about 290 million VND). Previously, FIFA had warned PSSI because the match between the Indonesian team and Australia at Bung Karno Stadium (Indonesia) still took place on September 10 but was not played at the scheduled time (postponed).
After the 2-2 draw with host Bahrain on October 10, the Indonesian team's coaching staff and players reacted strongly to the referee's decisions. Head of the delegation Sumardji was banned by FIFA for one match and assistant coach Kim Jong-jin will miss four matches. PSSI was fined an additional 10,000 Swiss francs. Mr. Arya Sinulingga, a member of the PSSI Executive Board, shared: "There is no other way, PSSI can only comply with FIFA's punishment. PSSI needs to re-evaluate the mistakes, such as the late start of the match and the referee's reaction. We will have to improve the organization process to avoid similar situations from happening again."
Indonesia team causes ugly scene after 2-2 draw with Bahrain
Despite PSSI's commitment, FIFA still affirmed that it will closely monitor security issues when the Indonesian team plays at home in the 5th and 6th matches of the third qualifying round of the World Cup. The team will face Japan on November 15 and Saudi Arabia on November 19. FIFA announced that if any incidents occur, PSSI will receive additional heavy penalties.
