According to the Center for Industry and Trade Information and the Import-Export Department, Vietnam's coffee exports to major markets such as the EU, the US and Japan are still increasing in volume. However, a worrying point is that Vietnam's market share in these markets is gradually decreasing.
In the European Union, in the first four months of the year, Vietnam's coffee market share was only 10.5%, lower than the 11.4% in the same period last year. In the US, in the first five months of 2025, the market share decreased from 6.7% to 5.3%. In Japan, the market share also decreased from 27.5% to 24.6%.
The main reason for the decline in market share of Vietnamese coffee is that export prices are higher than many other sources on the market, causing a decline in competitiveness.
World coffee prices today
On the London Stock Exchange, the online price of Robusta coffee futures for September 2025 delivery closed the morning session on August 6 at $3,380/ton, down slightly by 0.94% ($33/ton) from the previous session. Arabica coffee prices rose as tensions between the US and Brazil escalated, with the US considering imposing a 50% tariff on goods from Brazil from August 6. The possibility of coffee being exempted from this tariff is getting slimmer.
The situation became more tense after Brazil's Supreme Court ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to be placed under house arrest. US President Donald Trump reacted strongly, calling it a "witch hunt" and saying it was a legitimate reason to impose high tariffs on Brazilian goods.
Brazil said it could easily redirect beef and coffee exports to other markets if the US imposed tariffs. China has also granted 183 more Brazilian companies licenses to export coffee to the country.
However, traders are concerned that the Chinese market will be unlikely to make up for the decline in Brazilian coffee exports to the United States – the world’s largest coffee consumer, with about a third of its imports coming from Brazil.
