Rescuing the bird that was tied up and standing as a decoy in the middle of the field

On the morning of November 27, Mr. Mai Ngoc Nhuan, Head of Thanh Hoa Coastal Forest Protection Department, said that after receiving information from Dan Tri newspaper, the unit's forces coordinated with the Ward Police, Quang Hung Ward People's Committee, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Sam Son City to be present at Village 1, Quang Hung Ward to rescue the birds.

Birds, including storks and herons, were tied up and standing in the middle of the field. Most of them were weak and tired after many days of "captivity".

The unit sent officers to wade into the fields to catch each animal, cut the ropes, and release them back into the wild.

Authorities also uprooted bamboo stakes used as traps and destroyed them. The remaining bamboo stakes in the lagoon were not capable of trapping or catching birds. They also destroyed the tents and beds that people used to "ambush" birds and storks on the shore.

According to Mr. Nhuan, the unit could not identify the person who caught and tied up the birds in the field area of Hamlet 1, Quang Hung Ward. Most of the people who caught and trapped the birds did not have stable jobs, so people in the village and commune were afraid to report them.

"There were less than 10 birds so it was not possible to issue a fine, the working group agreed to release them back into the wild after cutting the ropes. It is very possible that the subject knew that the authorities were coming to handle the matter, so he untied and removed some of the birds," said Mr. Nhuan.

According to Mr. Nhuan, the tools used to catch and trap birds are quite simple and easy to buy. Nets to catch and encircle wild birds cost 30,000 VND/kg. 1kg of net can be spread for 100m; bamboo poles and reeds can be bought at the market; fake storks are often cut from foam by trappers. In some places, people also use technological devices that make noise to lure wild birds.

Birds in Quang Xuong area are mainly storks and herons, which are not of high value, but it has become a custom that many people secretly set traps at night during bird season (from September to December of the lunar calendar).

Previously, on November 24, Dan Tri newspaper reported that wild birds were captured, tied up and forced to stand as bait in the middle of a field in village 1, Quang Hung ward, Sam Son city.

Since September, Thanh Hoa Coastal Forest Protection Department has dismantled and destroyed 19,280m of nets, 43 tents, 862 traps, 16 lure speakers, 1,230 foam storks, 235 bamboo poles, and released 368 birds of various species into the wild. The unit has also handled 17 administrative violations in the field of forest animal protection, collecting 61 million VND for the budget.
