Speaking on the evening of September 2 on his weekly television show, Mr. Maduro said: "It is September, and the air is filled with the scent of Christmas. That is why this year I will issue an early Christmas on October 1 as a way to thank and express gratitude to all of you."

This is not the first time Mr Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, has declared Christmas early. He has done so during the COVID-19 pandemic but never this early.

However, not everyone is eager to start singing Christmas carols due to the economic hardship. The minimum wage in Venezuela will remain unchanged from 2022: 130 bolivars ($3.55) a month.

In return, workers also receive a monthly food allowance of about $40, and those registered in the state welfare system will receive an additional $90.
