Pope Francis appears via screen in St. Peter's Square
On November 26, AP news agency quoted Pope Francis as saying that he has pneumonia but will still go to Dubai (United Arab Emirates - UAE) next week to attend the United Nations climate conference (COP28).
He did not appear at the window overlooking St. Peter's Square as he did on previous Sundays, a day after the Vatican said he had a mild cold. He presided over a midday Mass broadcast live from the chapel in the Vatican hotel where he is staying.
"Happy Sunday. Today I cannot appear at the window because I have pneumonia," Pope Francis said, adding that a priest sitting next to him would read the message instead.
Pope Francis appeared on television with a cough and a large bandage on his hand. The Vatican did not immediately respond to AP questions about whether he was receiving intravenous treatment.
The pope said he had pneumonia, although the Vatican said a day earlier that he had a CT scan at a hospital in Rome that tested negative for lung complications.
In the message, the Pope said he would still travel to the UAE to attend the COP28 climate conference and would deliver a speech as scheduled on December 2. He said climate change was a serious problem, especially for young people.
Pope Francis, who turns 87 on December 17, was admitted to a hospital in Rome on March 29 with a respiratory infection and spent three days in hospital. The Vatican said he had bronchitis and was being treated with intravenous antibiotics.
