In September, the new European Union (EU) Ambassador Julien Guerrier began his term of office in Vietnam.

Ambassador Guerrier has worked for nearly 30 years at the European Commission, mainly in the areas of international trade negotiations, industrial policy and research, as well as business management.

Before coming to Vietnam, he was in charge of the General Directorate for Overall Policy Development for Horizon Europe, the EU's funding programme for research and innovation.

Ambassador Guerrier assessed that Vietnam is a country with an important position in terms of economy, population, and geographical location in Asia - Pacific , and therefore, an important partner of the EU.

During his tenure, Ambassador Guerrier pledged to continue to support and cooperate to help Vietnam achieve its goal of becoming a developed country by 2045 and reducing emissions to zero by 2050.

This November, Vietnam and the European Union (EU) celebrate the 33rd anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations (November 28, 1990 - November 28, 2023), in the context of the relationship between the two sides achieving many important breakthroughs.

Vietnam - EU relations have recently developed strongly in many areas including politics - diplomacy, security - defense, science - technology, education - training, climate change response, cyber security...

The implementation of the Vietnam - EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) from August 2020 contributed to making the EU the 5th largest trade partner and investor of Vietnam.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and the EU has been increasing continuously. Two-way trade turnover in 2022 reached 62.2 billion USD, up 14.2% compared to 2021. The EU is currently Vietnam's largest ODA donor.

The EU attaches importance to developing relations with Vietnam on the basis of trustworthy political relations, extensive economic cooperation and rich cooperation potential, especially in new fields and development trends of the world such as clean energy transition and green transition.
