SOS Kindergarten teacher in Ca Mau, 30 years of work, salary about 6 million

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên23/12/2024

Although operating under an autonomous mechanism, SOS Ca Mau Kindergarten still applies the salary scale established in 2016, making the salary of teachers with 30 years of service only about 6 million VND.

SOS Ca Mau Kindergarten belongs to SOS Children's Village Ca Mau (Ward 5, Ca Mau City, Ca Mau), established in 1997 under the model of receiving aid from SOS Children's Villages International. However, after 2020, aid from SOS Children's Villages International was gradually reduced, forcing the school to switch to a financially autonomous model.

Although operating under an autonomous mechanism, the school still applies the salary mechanism and some other financial items according to the regulations of SOS Children's Villages. Accordingly, the old salary scale was built in 2016. This leads to teachers' income being lower and lower than the local average. Currently, the actual salary of teachers at the school is only about half of the salary of teachers in the public sector. Some teachers with nearly 30 years of experience working at the school only receive about 6 million VND/month.

Ms. Vo Hong Diep, who has worked at the school for 14 years, currently receives a salary of just over 4.7 million VND/month, despite having a bachelor's degree in pedagogy from Ho Chi Minh City. Many other teachers also expressed difficulties with the salary not being commensurate, but still stick with the school because of their love for children and hope for change.

Ms. Ly Tuyet Ly, Principal of SOS Kindergarten, shared that although the school has tried every way to improve teachers’ income, it still faces difficulties due to the financial mechanism. Currently, Ms. Ly only receives a salary of more than 8 million VND/month.

Ms. Ly and the teachers have proposed to the leaders of Ca Mau province to separate the school from the management of SOS Children's Village Ca Mau to become a self-financed public school. According to Ms. Ly, although this model may face pressure and difficulties, it will certainly be more feasible than the current situation.

According to Ms. Ly, in the 2023-2024 school year, SOS Ca Mau Kindergarten has 86 kindergarten students, divided into 4 classes. Due to the decreasing number of orphans and disadvantaged children, the school has expanded to accept children from outside with a fee to maintain operations.

It is known that the People's Committee of Ca Mau province has clearly understood the difficulties of SOS Ca Mau Kindergarten and is coordinating with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to find appropriate management solutions. Ca Mau province is ready to receive the school if it is handed over and commits to reorganizing its activities in accordance with current policies and regulations, while creating conditions for the school to develop sustainably.
