Murder while resolving conflict, 9 defendants sentenced

After a week of deliberation, on the afternoon of June 19, the People's Court of Binh Phuoc province announced the first instance verdict, sentencing Trinh Cong Quynh (43 years old); Le Van Thin (31 years old) each defendant to 17 years in prison; Huynh Thanh Son (32 years old); Le Bao Quoc Em (32 years old); Nguyen Thanh Hai (36 years old); Nguyen Chi Co (31 years old) each defendant to 16 years in prison; Nguyen Hong Quang (41 years old) to 13 years in prison; Dinh Ngoc Trai (23 years old) to 8 years in prison; Pham Quoc Do (31 years old) to 13 years and 6 months in prison, all for murder.

Defendant Nguyen Duy Quoc Truong (30 years old) was sentenced to 3 years in prison but given a suspended sentence for disturbing public order. All defendants reside in Binh Phuoc province.

The representative of the People's Procuracy read the indictment against the defendants.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Duy Quoc Truong and Trinh Cong Quynh had a conflict with each other. At around 8:00 p.m. on November 26, 2021, Quynh and Truong made an appointment to meet in Hamlet 1, Tien Hung Commune, Dong Xoai City to resolve the conflict.

At around 9pm that same day, Quynh called a man named Huy for help, but Huy was drinking loudly and could not hear Quynh, so he sent Quynh's phone number to Hai. Hai then contacted Quynh and was asked by Quynh to meet Truong to resolve the conflict. Hai then invited Thin and Trai to go with him. Thin invited Quang, Son, Do, Co, and Em to go with him, bringing along some homemade knives.

Truong brought a machete, an iron pipe and pepper spray and invited Dao Le Duy Phong to the meeting place. When they arrived, Truong and Quynh started talking and argued. Quynh waved her hand to signal, but Thin, Em, Son, Quang, Do and Co took homemade knives and iron pipes and chased after Truong and Phong.

9 defendants were sentenced for murder and 1 defendant was sentenced for disturbing public order.

At this time, Truong returned to the car to get the iron pipe, while Phong took the pepper spray and the machete but then ran away. During the chase, Phong was slashed to death by Thin with a knife. After committing the crime, all 9 people turned themselves in to the police and admitted their crimes.

At the first instance trial, the panel of judges determined that Truong was the one who invited Quynh to use a weapon to resolve a conflict, resulting in death and disorder in the locality.

Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances as well as the nature and severity of each defendant's actions, the panel sentenced 9 defendants to fixed-term imprisonment for murder and 1 defendant to a suspended sentence for disturbing public order.
