Google will combine Chrome OS and Android into a single platform

Google plans to merge its mobile operating system with ChromeOS, the software that runs on Google's Chromebook laptops.

Sameer Samat, President of Android ecosystem at Google (USA), said that the company plans to combine its mobile operating system with ChromeOS, the software running on Google's Chromebook laptops.

Google will combine Chrome OS and Android into a single platform, said Sameer Samat.

Samat, who is responsible for Android deployments across mobile devices, wearables, televisions and cars, added that he is “interested in how people use their laptops today,” implying that he may be adding a new direction.

The comment is the latest official confirmation of a change that has been rumored for months.

In November 2024, tech website Android Authority reported that Google was "migrating ChromeOS to Android," with the goal of competing with the iPad tablet.

That process may have already begun, with Google itself announcing in June 2024 that ChromeOS would now be "built largely on top of the Android platform." Chromebooks can now run many Android apps.

Meanwhile, Android is getting a little closer to ChromeOS this year with new features including desktop mode, resizable windows, and improved external display support.

According to technology experts, the combination of the two operating systems ChromeOS and Android has been rumored for months and has been expected for a decade.

Google's move to bring its two operating systems under one roof makes sense in theory, allowing them to accelerate feature development and improve functionality on tablets - a technology device segment where both of their current operating systems are slower than Apple's iPadOS./.
