Dutch police confirmed on January 1 that more than 200 people were arrested on New Year's Eve in riots across the country, including dozens of police officers injured.

Police in several cities were attacked with fireworks and stones, a police spokesman told NOS television, describing it as a night of "unacceptable" violence and serious incidents.

Police in the city of Rotterdam confirmed more than 100 cars and other vehicles were set on fire, while in Amsterdam, The Hague and several other cities riot squads were deployed to disperse violent crowds.

Riot squads were also mobilised across the country to support firefighters who were attacked with fireworks as they tried to extinguish several blazes.

Meanwhile, in the city of Haarlem, a 19-year-old man was killed in a fireworks attack just before the New Year's Eve.
