On May 22, an official from the South Korean Presidential Office said that President Yoon Suk-yeol, US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida may hold a three-way summit in Washington, DC (USA) in early July.

Yonhap news agency quoted the above official as stating that "the possibility of holding a Korea-US-Japan summit this summer in Washington is being discussed."

Meanwhile, a senior US official said President Biden proposed the summit when he met with the South Korean President and Japanese Prime Minister on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Hiroshima, Japan on May 21. At the meeting, the three leaders agreed to take trilateral cooperation to a new level.

If the Washington summit is held, it will be the first time the three countries' leaders have met at a formal trilateral summit, not on the sidelines of a multilateral meeting.
