The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and the South Korean-US Joint Command announced on August 12 that they will conduct the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise from August 19-29.

According to Colonel Lee Sung-Jun, spokesman for the JCS, more than 19,000 soldiers from both sides are expected to participate in the exercise, with a total of 48 field training contents such as joint outdoor maneuver exercises, sea landing exercises, live-fire exercises, and exercises between the two countries' marine forces.
In particular, the Korean and US militaries will focus on dealing with weapons of mass destruction and multi-domain operations using diverse weapons, thereby further enhancing the capabilities and readiness of the two countries' joint forces.
In addition to the South Korean and US militaries, member countries of the United Nations Command (UNC) will participate in this exercise, and the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission will conduct supervision to ensure compliance with the Korean War Armistice Agreement.
“Ulchi Freedom Shield” is one of the largest exercises in the Indo- Pacific region.
This is also the first time South Korea and the US have carried out this exercise since the two countries adopted the Joint Guidelines for Nuclear Deterrence Operations on the Korean Peninsula.
