Students are the real subject and center with the Discussion Classroom model

Creative model to implement the 2018 General Education Program

Reporting on new and creative points in the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program at Tri Duc High School, Ms. Chu Thi Hien, Principal of the school, shared about the discussion class model that the school has created and implemented for over a year.

This is an important part of the Tri Duc 4.0 Comprehensive Education Development Project authored by Mr. Ha Trung Hung - Chairman of the School Board, with the participation of many school staff and teachers.

A discussion class is a class where, when it comes to class, students take turns to discuss, argue, debate, and share with each other to clarify, understand the nature of the problem, and finalize each unit of knowledge. That means they create their own knowledge, under the organization, care, and confirmation of the teacher.

In the Discussion Classroom, students play the role of the subject, the true center; students' activities are autonomous in learning, self-constructing knowledge. For teachers, the role is the object. Teachers' activities are to organize, supervise, care for and confirm results; handle pedagogical situations when necessary, absolutely no lecturing.

At Tri Duc High School, the maximum number of students in a Discussion Class is 16 students per class. Each class manages and uses a separate classroom both day and night with a suitable space arrangement. The classroom is equipped with a cabinet for students' personal computers and smartphones, a shared reference bookcase, and shelves for books and learning materials.

To meet the requirements of developing a modern, personalized and highly interactive Discussion Classroom model, the school has invested in and synchronously deployed technology and equipment items.

Up to now, the Discussion Classroom model has been implemented by Tri Duc High School in 3 phases. Of which, phase 3 (Consolidation and dissemination) has been implemented from November 2024 to present. In this phase, the school established the Discussion Classroom Project Management Board, directly managed by the Chairman of the School Council.

As a result, based on the ΔRZC index (difference between semester results and standardized input), the project-implementing classes were all superior to the control class in all subjects. Students made significant progress in communication, debate, teamwork, and especially self-study. From being passive, many students became proactive and confident in presenting and defending their views. Teachers also changed their perceptions, clearly seeing that the model had created intrinsic motivation for students.

The school intends to replicate the model, but it depends on the ability to select and train teachers. In the immediate future, each grade will deploy 2-3 more classes.

Persistent with innovation in the right direction

Affirming that this educational innovation is on the right track and believing in the success of the innovation, especially with the motto "learning by doing", Mr. Ha Trung Hung, Chairman of the Board of Tri Duc High School, hopes that the Ministry of Education and Training will persistently and firmly pursue this direction to the end. Tri Duc High School will also devote all its efforts to realizing it with the determination to effectively implement and spread the Discussion Class model, the principle without exception is "for the students".

“The Discussion Classroom model is not only in line with the spirit of innovation in the 2018 General Education Program, but also contributes to creating a generation of students who know how to learn, debate, cooperate, and create their own knowledge. That is the path for Vietnamese education to advance in the new era,” Mr. Ha Trung Hung shared.

At the meeting, representatives of the leaders of the departments and offices of the Ministry of Education and Training highly appreciated the dedication of teacher Ha Trung Hung in particular and the collective of Tri Duc High School in general; at the same time, they exchanged and discussed the Discussion Class model, as well as gave suggestions for more effective implementation of this model.

Acknowledging the efforts of the staff and teachers of Tri Duc High School, Permanent Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong said that the school is on the right track. The Discussion Classroom model has been implemented for over a year. According to the Deputy Minister, the school should be steadfast and persistent in implementing it, because education is a process. It is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the model at the school before replicating and spreading it.

From the Discussion Class model at Tri Duc High School, the Deputy Minister also spent a lot of time sharing about the implementation of educational innovation, especially the innovation of teaching methods and requirements for the team; the ultimate goal is to form a generation of proactive, creative, confident students with the capacity to solve practical problems in life...
