The program is organized by the People's Committee of Vung Tau Ward in coordination with units, organizations, unions, forces of the Ho Chi Minh City Command and many environmental protection clubs and teams.
From 6am, ocean trash drifted into the Bai Dau area, thick and black, stretching for many kilometers, mainly decomposed water hyacinth, dry firewood, mangrove branches, plastic bags, styrofoam boxes... causing serious pollution, affecting urban aesthetics and tourism activities.
More than 1,000 people including officials, employees, armed forces, youth union members... divided up to clean up and transport garbage to shore. After more than 4 hours of operation, about 60 tons of garbage were collected and transported by specialized vehicles of Vung Tau Urban Environmental Services and Construction Joint Stock Company (VESCO) to Toc Tien Centralized Waste Treatment Area.
Speaking to SGGP reporters, Mr. Nguyen Tan Ban, Secretary of the Vung Tau Ward Party Committee, said: The situation of ocean waste drifting into Vung Tau sea has seriously affected the environment, urban beauty and especially tourism activities in the area. Therefore, the ward mobilizes forces and vehicles to participate in the collection every week, especially during the peak summer season.
According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hau, Deputy General Director of VESCO, since May 25, ocean waste has continuously flooded Vung Tau beaches with high intensity, especially since the beginning of July. The main cause comes from the impact of climate change, currents and monsoons carrying waste from large river systems such as Saigon, Dong Nai , Tien, Lap, Ray rivers... to the sea. In addition, waste also arises from fishing boat mooring activities, water transport and the habit of dumping waste directly into the sea.
“In the past, garbage only appeared for 5-7 days, but in the past 3 years, garbage has been continuously flowing ashore for 4-5 months, without a certain cycle, with an increasingly large volume,” said Mr. Hau.
At the launch, leaders of Vung Tau ward called on organizations, clubs, and volunteer groups to continue to join and contribute to cleaning the coast, spreading environmental protection awareness to the community.
“In the long term, we will recommend that Ho Chi Minh City leaders work with localities with river mouths bordering Vung Tau to implement solutions to prevent garbage from the source, minimizing the amount of garbage drifting ashore,” emphasized Nguyen Tan Ban, Secretary of the Vung Tau Ward Party Committee.
