On February 4, the Southern Airports Authority said it is still closely monitoring the situation of flight delays and cancellations due to the impact of foggy weather in the northern provinces affecting operations at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
According to the operation plan, on February 4, there were 893 flights departing and arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The total number of passengers remained high, nearly 130,000 people.
The number of domestic passengers reached more than 60,571 people, a decrease of more than 1,000 people compared to February 3, but the pressure at the station is still very high because the delay has not ended due to the impact of the weather.
Tan Son Nhat Airport Operations Center said that from 0:00 on February 1 to 16:00 on February 3 (December 22-24), more than 1,100 flights were operated.
Of these, 659 flights were delayed, accounting for nearly 60%. The two airlines with the highest number of delayed flights were Vietjet Air with 257 flights, accounting for more than 74% of the total number of flights operated by the airline. Vietnam Airlines had 209 delayed flights, accounting for more than 59%. These are the two airlines with the highest rate of delayed flights.
Airlines have to increase empty flights to Tan Son Nhat every Tet season due to the "load imbalance" of passengers traveling to and from different regions. Bad weather conditions further increase this pressure as passengers are congested at Tan Son Nhat domestic departure terminal.
In addition, some airlines such as Jetstar Pacific also had 44 delayed flights (accounting for 70%), Bamboo Airways had 43 flights (accounting for 57%)...
In addition to the delayed departures, 40 flights at Tan Son Nhat were forced to cancel due to bad weather, accounting for 3.63% of the total number of flights.
The situation of flight delays and cancellations due to fog in the past 4 consecutive days has caused the pressure of "load imbalance" to continue to increase.
Airlines have had to increase empty flights (Ferry) from local airports to Tan Son Nhat to wait, maintain, and service aircraft and increase capacity for flights from Ho Chi Minh City to the Central and Northern regions.
From February 1 to February 4, there were more than 310 empty flights from airports to Tan Son Nhat. On February 3 alone, the number of empty flights reached 104. This caused heavy losses for airlines due to many empty flights.
According to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, flight delays and cancellations are expected to decrease after February 8, when the weather forecast in the Northern region shows signs of improvement, with less fog.
