On February 18, Hue Central Hospital said that since the beginning of the year, the hospital has recorded 131 cases positive for measles, including 93 children and 38 adults (while in 2024 there were only 46 cases).

Notably, many children with underlying diseases when infected with measles have severe complications and require mechanical ventilation.

Doctor Nguyen Dac Luong, deputy head of the pediatric intensive care and emergency department, Pediatric Center (Hue Central Hospital), said that since the beginning of the year, the unit has received 5 severe measles cases, of which 3 cases required ventilators.

In these 3 cases, there is a child patient from Ha Tinh who was transferred with pneumonia complications, and his health is currently improving well.

In addition, there are 2 children with underlying diseases of leukemia and autoimmune encephalitis. Both are currently being treated and actively monitored.

Dr. Hoang Thi Lan Huong, deputy director of Hue Central Hospital, said measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause many serious complications. Severe cases need to be isolated and closely monitored.

According to Dr. Huong, to effectively prevent measles, people should proactively take children from 9 months to 2 years old who have not been vaccinated or have not received 2 doses of measles vaccine to get vaccinated fully and on schedule. At the same time, children should not come into close contact with people suspected of having measles, and should maintain personal hygiene for children every day.

Dr. Huong also said that to strengthen the prevention of flu, measles and respiratory diseases, hospital leaders have directed centers, departments and rooms to be vigilant for symptoms such as cough, fever and difficulty breathing in order to detect and isolate cases promptly.

In addition, the hospital will closely monitor critically ill patients, patients in intensive care units, and high-risk groups. Measures such as enhancing personal and environmental hygiene, disinfecting high-risk areas, improving air quality, and limiting crowds in closed spaces will also be implemented.

"The hospital also recommends that staff, students, patients, relatives and visitors wear masks when entering the hospital, especially in high-risk areas," said Dr. Huong.
