Hyundai and Kia are instructing owners of certain 2023 and 2024 model year vehicles to park outdoors and away from construction while the two manufacturers recall the vehicles to replace potentially fire-prone oil pumps.

Under the decision, more than 91,000 models across Hyundai and Kia's product lines, including the 2023 Elantra, 2023 Kona, 2023-2024 Palisade, 2023 Sonata and 2023 Tucson from Hyundai and the 2023-2024 Seltos, 2023 Soul and 2023 Sportage from Kia.

The problem is believed to stem from the electric oil pump used with Hyundai and Kia's Idle Stop & Go feature.

The Korean automakers said a capacitor on a circuit board in the oil pump assembly for the transmission may have been damaged by a supplier during production. This could lead to a number of problems, but the most worrying of which is the risk of fire due to heat buildup in the control module.

The two companies urged owners to park outside and stay away from the structures until repairs are completed.

Owners of affected vehicles are expected to be notified of the recall starting September 25 for Hyundai vehicles and September 28 for Kia vehicles. Dealers will inspect and replace the oil pump control unit if necessary.

Kia said it had received six reports of parts melting, but no fires or injuries. Hyundai also confirmed four “heat incidents” and no injuries .
