How did Iran react after Israel's attack?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên27/10/2024

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on October 26 that Iran is determined to defend itself after Israeli warplanes attacked military bases and missile sites in Iran that morning.

"I think we have shown that our determination to defend ourselves has no limits," Araghchi said in an interview with the official website of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to AFP.

The above statement by Foreign Minister Araghchi is the first comment by a senior Iranian official since Israel launched an airstrike on Iran on the morning of October 26 in response to Tehran launching about 200 missiles at Israel on the evening of October 1.

The Iranian military confirmed that only the radar system was damaged in the October 26 Israeli airstrikes on the capital Tehran and several Iranian provinces, according to AFP.

"Thanks to the timely response of the country's air defense system, the attacks caused limited damage and some radar systems were damaged," the General Staff of Iran's armed forces said in a statement broadcast on state television. "A large number of missiles were intercepted and enemy aircraft were prevented from entering the country's airspace," the statement said.

The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces did not immediately issue a statement of retaliation, but stressed: "While reserving its legitimate and legal right to respond at the appropriate time, Iran is prioritizing the establishment of a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon."

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned on October 26 that Iran should not make a mistake in responding to Israel's attack, saying that the October 26 attack should end the retaliation between the two countries, according to Reuters.

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed that Israel chose attack targets in Iran based on national interests, not on US instructions.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's office made the assertion in response to what it called a "completely false" Israeli television report that Israel had avoided attacking Iranian oil and gas facilities due to US pressure, Reuters reported.
