Kaspersky will be "banned" in the US?

The Joe Biden administration is expected to ban the sale of Kaspersky's anti-virus software solutions in the US this weekend, Reuters reported.

According to Neowin , the announcement will be made as early as this week due to concerns from the Joe Biden administration that Kaspersky software is being used by critical infrastructure providers as well as state and local governments.

The US government is concerned that Kaspersky could pose a serious risk because it has privileged access to computer systems, which could allow it to steal sensitive documents or even withhold important security updates, leaving systems vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Kaspersky sanctions could take effect from September 29

The report details restrictions on Kaspersky, including bans on downloading software updates, reselling and licensing the product. If the government goes ahead with the plan, the sanctions will take effect on September 29. The delay is intended to give businesses and other organizations time to find alternatives.

The ban affects products that integrate Kaspersky into their software under a different name. Affected companies will be notified so they can adjust their plans.

The Kaspersky ban was reportedly decided after the US Department of Commerce conducted a national security investigation into the software. The ban was delayed due to back-and-forth between the US Department of Commerce and Kaspersky over mitigations proposed by the Russian anti-virus software maker. However, the Commerce Department decided that none of the mitigations were acceptable.

In 2017, the US Department of Homeland Security banned all federal agencies from using Kaspersky software, citing national security concerns, but without providing any evidence. At the time, Eugene Kaspersky, founder and CEO of Kaspersky Labs, denounced the move as “completely groundless paranoia.” The Russian cybersecurity company also filed a lawsuit, but it was later dismissed by the court.

Founded in Moscow in 1997, Kaspersky Lab has become one of the world's most successful antivirus software companies, alongside American rivals McAfee and Symantec. Kaspersky Lab researchers are known for analyzing government cyberattacks as well as cybercrime threats that affect everyday users.
