AI is emerging as a powerful tool and an honest shield for dissertations

To check for plagiarism, traditional tools often rely solely on comparing text to look for direct matches. Meanwhile, AI uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to “understand” the meaning behind words; analyze semantics using word embeddings and sentence embeddings; convert words and sentences into numerical representations...

Several popular tools like Turnitin, iThenticate, or Grammarly use AI-powered text comparison algorithms to detect similarities between your thesis and online sources, books, articles, or academic databases.

AI also goes into stylometry. Each person has unique writing habits, from average sentence length and vocabulary choice to the use of conjunctions and the complexity of sentence structure. If the style of a thesis suddenly changes, the AI will immediately alert you.

For theses that contain numerical data, charts or images, AI uses Computer Vision and Machine Learning techniques to check. It can detect anomalies such as overly perfect numbers or fake charts...

What if students used AI to write their essays? Using analysis and comparison algorithms, tools like Turnitin and GPTZero can spot anomalies in machine-generated content, such as overly uniform sentence structure, lack of stylistic variety, or specific phrasing that deviates from the typical style for each type of thesis.

Don't let AI "manipulate"

Using AI to check graduate theses helps reduce plagiarism, ensuring that theses truly reflect students’ abilities. It also enhances fairness and transparency in student assessment, as well as reduces the burden on lecturers in manual checking, allowing them to focus on instruction. It also serves as a deterrent and educational role, encouraging students to be honest and cite properly.

Still, no AI system is perfect. Relying solely on AI can lead to errors in student evaluation, which can hurt serious learners or miss real cases of cheating. Human oversight is still needed.
