How much is the fine for not turning on car lights at night?

Pursuant to Article 58 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law, the conditions for drivers participating in traffic are as follows:

Article 58. Conditions for drivers participating in traffic

1. Drivers participating in traffic must be of the age and health specified in Article 60 of this Law and have a driver's license appropriate to the type of vehicle they are allowed to drive, issued by a competent state agency.

When participating in traffic, learners must practice driving on a driving practice car and have a driving instructor to assist them.

2. Drivers must carry the following documents when operating a vehicle:

a) Vehicle registration; b) Driving license for motor vehicle drivers as prescribed in Article 59 of this Law; c) Certificate of technical safety and environmental protection inspection for motor vehicles as prescribed in Article 55 of this Law; d) Certificate of civil liability insurance of motor vehicle owners”.

Drivers participating in traffic must meet health and age requirements and must carry all relevant vehicle documents.

How much is the fine for not turning on car lights at night?

The fine for cars and motorbikes participating in traffic without turning on their headlights according to specific regulations is as follows:

For motorbikes

According to Point l Clause 1 Article 6 Decree 100/2019/ND-CP; in case of motorbikes and motorcycles not turning on their headlights within the prescribed time, the fine for not turning on motorbike lights is prescribed as follows:

Fines from VND 100,000 to VND 200,000 shall be imposed on drivers who do not use headlights during the prescribed time from 7:00 p.m. the previous day to 5:00 a.m. the following day or when fog or bad weather limits visibility.

At night, drivers of motorbikes and motorcyclists must turn on their headlights, otherwise they will be fined from 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND.

For cars

In case of violation of driving without headlights for cars, Point g Clause 3 Article 5 Decree 100/2019/ND-CP stipulates the penalty for this violation of not turning on headlights as follows:

Fines from VND 800,000 to VND 1,000,000 shall be imposed on drivers who do not use or do not use enough headlights during the prescribed time from 7:00 p.m. the previous day to 5:00 a.m. the following day, when fog or bad weather limits visibility; use high beams when avoiding oncoming vehicles.

In addition, if the driver does not turn on the lights as prescribed and causes a traffic accident, in addition to the fine, the driver will be subject to an additional penalty - the driver's license will be revoked for 2 to 4 months (according to Point c, Clause 11, Article 5, Decree 100/2019/ND-CP).

Therefore, not turning on car lights at night will result in a fine of 800,000 VND to 1,000,000 VND. If causing a traffic accident, in addition to the fine, the driver's license will also be revoked for 2 to 4 months.
