Barcelona Port Director Lluis Salvado said ships arriving at the port are facing delays of 10 to 15 days as they have to sail around Africa to avoid attacks in the Red Sea.
The delays have affected ships carrying all products, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to Salvado. Barcelona is currently one of the largest LNG receiving ports in Spain.
However, he stressed that the current situation affects ports in the Eastern Mediterranean more, because the Western Mediterranean region, including Barcelona, is closer to routes around Africa, so the delay times are also shorter.
Several shipping companies have suspended shipping along the Red Sea route to avoid Houthi attacks. Many fuel tankers continue to use the route, while Qatar Energy, the world’s second-largest LNG exporter, has stopped sending tankers through the Red Sea due to security concerns.
