Inspired by Cervantes’ novel of the same name, the ballet, choreographed by the legendary Marius Petipa in 1869 and set to music by Ludwig Minkus, takes the audience on a journey between “dream” and “reality” of the knight Don Quixote. The character Don Quixote is the embodiment of the romantic ideal – a man immersed in a magical world where love and courage are deified.

The Old Nobleman of La Mancha takes the audience into the romantic context of love, of the vibrant life in Spain, along with the changes in society and basic values that are brought to the stage with humor and gentle satire through the language of dance.

Choreographer Marius Petipa took a small piece from the original - the love story of Kitri and Basilio, to build into an energetic ballet.

The work focuses on the passionate love story between Kitri and Basilio - where passionate flamenco steps, bustling castanets blend with top ballet techniques such as fouetté or grand jeté. The unique blend of Spanish dance and classical ballet language creates a dramatic dialogue about the desire to love and dare to live a dream.

Beyond the romantic story, the ballet “Don Quixote” is created by a delicate artistic structure, where the image of the knight Don Quixote acts as a poetic bridge between two worlds . The audience will be led from the vibrant, colorful everyday scene of the Spanish flea market, into the magical dream spaces opened by the old knight. The continuous transition between “reality” and “dream” creates a special attraction, making “Don Quixote” not only an entertaining masterpiece but also a profound artistic declaration about human aspiration, illusion and the nature of happiness.

Regarding the ballet “Don Quixote”, Meritorious Artist Phan Manh Duc, Director of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, shared that despite having to overcome many obstacles such as actors, time, finance, etc., with the determination to bring the world’s top artistic products to Vietnam, after a period of staging, the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet is ready to perform “Don Quixote”.

The ballet is choreographed by Meritorious Artist Luu Thu Lan and Pham Minh - a talented artist who graduated from the Kiev National Ballet School, performed at Ballet du Capitole (Toulouse) and is currently the Director of La Salle Dance School (France).

The Symphony Orchestra of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, conducted by Dong Quang Vinh, will perform live. The accompaniment of Thanh Productions promises to bring exquisite and attractive visual art experiences to the audience.
