Vietnamese vegetable village receives world award

(NLDO) – Surpassing 260 applications from 60 countries, Tra Que Vegetable Village in Quang Nam province was awarded the "Best Tourist Village" award by UN Tourism.


On the morning of November 15 (Vietnam time), the Award Announcement Ceremony took place in Colombia, officially recognizing Tra Que Vegetable Village in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province as the Best Tourist Village in 2024 by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

This is the result and recognition of efforts in preserving indigenous cultural values; traditional crafts; long-standing lifestyles; creativity and focus on developing sustainable, community-based tourism and services; demonstrating the kindness and hospitality of local people.

Tra Que vegetable village is a place that attracts many tourists to visit and experience.

"Best Tourist Village" Award The UN Tourism Initiative was launched to enhance the role of tourism in protecting rural areas, including landscapes, knowledge systems, biodiversity and culture, local activities including agriculture, forestry, livestock, fisheries and gastronomy.

Villages selected for the award must have outstanding natural and cultural resources, and have innovative actions and commitments to tourism development in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

After evaluating more than 260 applications from 60 countries, UN Tourism recognized Tra Que Vegetable Village's rich and outstanding natural and cultural resources, along with the village's commitments and actions in compliance with the three main pillars of sustainable tourism development.

Tra Que vegetable village is about 3 km from Hoi An ancient town, formed in the 16th century.

At the recommendation of the Award Jury, UN Tourism officially recognized Tra Que Vegetable Village as one of the best tourist villages of UN Tourism.

UN Tourism will present this award to Quang Nam province at the 2nd Annual Meeting of the UN Tourism Best Village Network within the framework of the "International Conference on Rural Tourism" held in Quang Nam from December 7 to 12, 2024 with the participation and witness of Government Leaders; Deputy Secretary General of UN Tourism; Leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism...

Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that recently, Hoi An has been recognized as a Heritage City and a Creative City by UNESCO in the field of Crafts and Folk Arts.

Now, with the Best Tourist Village Award 2024 for Tra Que Vegetable Village from the United Nations Tourism Organization, it will further fuel resources and create motivation for the city to constantly innovate, create and make more efforts in preserving and promoting the historical, cultural, natural values and strengths of the region...

Formed in the 16th century and located 3 km northeast of Hoi An Ancient Town, Tra Que village has the unique characteristics of a river island near the sea, surrounded by Co Co River and Tra Que lagoon, providing a mild climate and fertile soil, creating favorable conditions for local people to create and develop the traditional organic vegetable growing profession.

Currently, Tra Que village has 202 households participating in vegetable growing activities with 326 direct workers on an area of 18 hectares of cultivated land, bringing in a stable source of income. In April 2022, vegetable growing in Tra Que was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, belonging to the category of folk knowledge and traditional handicrafts.

In Tra Que village, historical relics such as Cham stone well, Tho Than Temple, Ngu Hanh Temple, Nguyen Van Dien's Tomb... or Cau Bong Worship Ceremony along with customs, practices, beliefs, and culinary culture are being preserved and promoted effectively, proving the village's long-standing development process.

Along with the rapid development of tourism-service activities in Hoi An, especially the orientation of developing green tourism and sustainable tourism of the city; Tra Que village has applied the model of community-based tourism village, in which, the labor and production process of the people is linked with tourism-service activities to create unique and attractive tourism products, meeting the needs and tastes of customers.
