According to TechRadar , LG announced that it is bringing the company's OLED TV expertise to the XR (extended reality) field and plans to launch an unnamed device next year.

According to a report from Korea's The Guru , LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan told a reporter at CES 2024 in the US that 'LG will launch an XR device as early as next year'. But it is not yet clear whether it will be the Meta Quest Pro 2 glasses or a completely new device of the company's own.

LG wants to enter the XR field with OLED expertise

Back in February 2023, it was reported that Meta was looking to partner with LG to create OLED displays for its XR glasses — likely the Meta Quest Pro 2, but possibly the Meta Quest 4 as well.

If the Quest Pro 2 is in the works, it’s safe to assume that 2025 would be the earliest we’d see it. Meta has a habit of announcing new XR hardware a year in advance, usually at its Meta Connect event in September or October, so an announcement in late 2024 and a release in 2025 would be more likely.

There isn't much information available about the device yet; however, there were rumors late last year in Korean news sites that LG was developing a virtual reality (VR) headset powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. The same rumor also correctly predicted that the Samsung XR/VR headset would use Qualcomm's new chipset, so it's likely that LG will soon launch a new VR product.

If LG’s VR headset does indeed run on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen, it will be a high-end product that can compete with the likes of the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. The device could cost upwards of $2,000.

All in all, it’s highly likely that LG is working on an XR project without working with Meta. The Korean company has world- class OLED display manufacturing capabilities, along with its equally strong home entertainment expertise, so creating an XR device under its own brand makes sense.
