UN launches new effort to resolve Libya election deadlock

Công LuậnCông Luận16/12/2024

(CLO) The United Nations will convene a technical committee of Libyan experts to find ways to put the country on the path to long-awaited national elections, Stephanie Koury, acting head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), said on Sunday.

The political process aimed at resolving more than a decade of conflict in Libya has stalled since elections scheduled for December 2021 collapsed over disputes over the eligibility of the main candidates.

They will also look for options to “achieve elections in the shortest possible time including with guarantees, commitments and proposed timeframes”, she added.

The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, was appointed through a UN-sponsored process in 2021, but the government is not currently recognized by the Libyan parliament . Dbeibah has said he will not hand over power to another government until national elections are held.

Libya was divided in 2014 between East and West, with two rival governments ruling each region.

Although major political factions have called for elections, many Libyans are skeptical of their true motives, fearing that a real election could see many powerful figures removed from power.

Since the fall of Gaddafi's regime in 2011 in a NATO-backed uprising, Libya has been mired in conflict and political instability.

“UNSMIL will continue to work to help advance the integration of military and security agencies and, together with partners, promote national reconciliation,” said Ms. Koury.

According to observers, if this initiative is successful, it will be a turning point for Libya to end division and restore political stability.
