Accordingly, the roadmap was approved at the government and heads of state meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council on May 27 on the situation in Sudan.

It outlines six elements including establishing a coordination mechanism to ensure that all efforts by regional and international actors are harmonized and effective; ending the conflict immediately, permanently and comprehensively; and providing practical humanitarian assistance.

The summit also stressed the paramount importance of a single, comprehensive and integrated peace process for Sudan under the joint auspices of the AU, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Arab League and the United Nations, together with like-minded partners.

The statement after the meeting also stated: “The Council, with deep concern, strongly condemns the senseless and unjustified ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has resulted in an unprecedented humanitarian situation, resulting in the loss of many innocent civilians.”

According to the Sudan Doctors Association, so far, the conflict that broke out in Sudan has killed 863 civilians, with 3,531 injured.

Meanwhile, figures from a recent report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs show that more than 1 million people have been displaced after clashes broke out in the country.
