Fearing assassination plot, North Korea increases security for Kim Jong-un?

South Korea's intelligence agency said on October 29 that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has tightened security for leader Kim Jong-un, amid concerns about an assassination plot.

Yonhap news agency reported that during the South Korean National Assembly session on October 29, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers that North Korea has increased protection for Kim Jong-un, with the deployment of jamming equipment and research into the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection equipment.

The move is believed to be aimed at ensuring the safety of the North Korean leader, in case of an assassination attempt on Kim Jong-un. The NIS stated that Kim Jong-un has had about 110 public events this year, an increase of about 60% compared to last year.

South Korea's spy agency also said that North Korea in October stopped using the "juche" calendar - a system of numbering years based on the birth year of late leader Kim Il-sung. The NIS added that Pyongyang is stepping up efforts to consolidate Kim Jong-un's position.

North Korea has not yet commented on the above statements from South Korea.

Tensions between South Korea and North Korea have escalated recently, after Pyongyang revised its constitution to designate South Korea as a “hostile state” and blew up some roads connecting the two countries. In addition, on October 28, the North Korean Ministry of National Defense accused South Korea of launching UAVs from a frontline island in the Yellow Sea toward Pyongyang.

North Korea said it had detected South Korean drones in Pyongyang three times in October, adding that the drones were carrying anti-North Korean leaflets and threatening to respond with force if such incidents were repeated. The South Korean military said it could not confirm the North's claims.
