On the evening of March 13, dozens of Gac Ma veterans in Quang Binh and Ha Tinh and Quang Tri provinces came to the banks of Gianh River (the section flowing through Quang Phuc Ward, Ba Don Town) to light candles and release floating lanterns to pay tribute and remember their comrades who sacrificed their lives at the Gac Ma incident (March 14, 1988).

This is an annual activity organized by Gac Ma veterans, each year they will go to a different location to offer flowers and light candles. At the same time, it is also an opportunity for veterans to meet each other, recall memories and moments of the Gac Ma incident.
Not only veterans but also their families were present to commemorate the martyrs.
Mr. Tran Quang Dung, a Gac Ma veteran from Quang Tri, was moved to see his comrades again.
"Being here to meet my comrades and witnessing their health makes me very happy. But I also miss my comrades who died out there in their twenties. We promise to continue to fulfill our responsibilities as veterans, as soldiers who were lucky enough to return from Gac Ma," Mr. Dung shared.
Veterans reunite
Veterans pray, watching the lights remember their fallen comrades.
On the Gianh River, the red candles flickered along the water, the veterans could not hide their emotions. Looking at the lights drifting into the distance, they sang the songs of youth that they had sung together on the trains. On this occasion, the Gac Ma veterans also brought their families to meet and exchange with each other.
Tomorrow, March 14, veterans will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Gac Ma incident and name a street after martyr Tran Van Phuong.
