A group of employees from the environmental sanitation agency in Sejong City (South Korea) spent the whole day working at a landfill to help a mother find the 26 million won (more than 459 million VND) she had saved to prepare for her child's surgery.

Most of the money was eventually recovered from the landfill.

The Korea Herald on March 6 quoted Sejong city officials as telling the story of an official named Kang Hyun-kyu receiving a panicked call from a woman over 60. She said she had mistakenly thrown money into the trash.

The call was made around 10 a.m. on February 24. The woman explained that she had mistakenly thrown 26 million won in cash down the garbage disposal of her apartment building.

Used in some residential areas in Korea, the system automatically sucks trash from containers, like a vacuum mechanism, and transfers the trash through underground pipes linked to a central waste treatment plant in the area.

After hearing her explanation, Officer Kang immediately took action. First, he ordered the garbage to be stopped. When the mother rushed to the garbage treatment center, she felt all hope was lost when she saw the huge amount of garbage mixed together.

At that time, the staff at the center were moved by her story and offered to help.

“I felt hopeless when I saw the piles of trash,” she wrote on the Sejong city government’s website. “But the workers kept searching. They carefully took out the money one by one.”

With the goal of finding as much money as possible, the employees sorted through the trash and searched. One person found the first 50,000 won bill, and then someone found a few 10,000 won bills.

After finishing the eight-hour effort, they recovered a total of 18.28 million won.

Despite the help, the group of employees refused to accept the bonus, and even apologized to the mother for not being able to recover all the lost money.

The mother cried because she was so touched by their selfless help. The story only became known when the mother wrote a thank you letter on the city government's website.
