Mercedes-Benz is developing a brake system mounted inside the transmission, which has the advantage of preventing brake dust emissions, helping to protect the environment.
Currently, traditional brake systems are designed to be located at the wheel, causing a large amount of brake dust to be worn and emitted into the environment.
To improve this weakness, Mercedes-Benz has researched, designed and placed the braking system inside the housing of the electric vehicle's transmission.
The German automaker says the new braking system offers many advantages, including never having to service the brakes throughout the life of the vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz has completely redesigned the braking system, with liquid-cooled, non-rotating discs and round brake pads that rotate with the engine. The system also does away with the need for traditional pistons and calipers.
It works by pushing the round brake pads against the fixed disc, from which the friction force will reduce the speed of the brake pads and at the same time reduce the speed of the engine and vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz says the system requires no maintenance over the life of the vehicle and all brake dust is kept inside the system in a compartment.
This will help future electric vehicles no longer have to worry about meeting the upcoming Euro 7 (EU7) emissions standards.
Accordingly, Euro 7 emission standards not only take into account engine emissions but also fine dust emitted from tires and brakes, so preventing brake dust from being released into the environment will become a topic of greater concern when EU7 comes into effect in 2027.
