Mercedes integrates ChatGPT application into cars

Báo Ninh BìnhBáo Ninh Bình19/06/2023

Starting June 16, Mercedes customers in the US can use the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their luxury cars to enhance the capabilities of their voice assistant.

According to Mercedes, customers in the US who own luxury vehicles equipped with the MBUX entertainment system can download ChatGPT through a Mercedes app or by voice command. About 900,000 Mercedes luxury vehicles in the US will participate in this three-month test program, during which Mercedes will evaluate how customers use the ChatGPT technology.

“The voice commands for the AI are done through the car, so you’re talking directly to the car,” said a Mercedes-Benz sales representative in California.

The integration of ChatGPT promises to take the car’s virtual assistant to the next level. Instead of just responding to simple, pre-programmed commands like “turn up the heat” or “directions to point X,” it can conduct natural-sounding conversations on almost any topic, including contextual questions. In addition to providing information, this mechanism will help improve the driver’s psychology on long trips.

Mercedes-Benz also said it is looking to expand the ChatGPT functionality, supporting additional convenient tasks such as making restaurant reservations or booking movie tickets via natural language right in the cars.

In terms of security, the German automaker claims that the content of your conversations will be stored in its own smart cloud infrastructure, and completely anonymous. However, this data will still be used for analysis and service improvement.

For its part, Microsoft has always affirmed that Microsoft's Azure OpenAI platform is secure and highly stable. The application of ChatGPT has brought many advantages to the American technology company Microsoft, because it is providing a version of ChatGPT through Microsoft's cloud storage system. Meanwhile, Amazon.com - Microsoft's rival - has long been researching to "cover" the virtual assistant Alexa in more car models. This pilot program will help Mercedes deploy plans to add ChatGPT to customers in many other countries and in many other languages. Voice data is stored, anonymized and analyzed in Mercedes' cloud.

In March, Mercedes rival General Motors announced it was looking into using ChatGPT in its vehicles as part of an expanded partnership with Microsoft.
