The Trump administration is considering banning China's AI chatbot DeepSeek from government devices, citing national security concerns.

U.S. government officials are also considering banning the chatbot from app stores and placing limits on how U.S.-based cloud providers can offer DeepSeek’s AI models to customers, the Wall Street Journal’s sources added, adding that those discussions are still in the early stages.

DeepSeek's low-cost AI models sparked a major sell-off in global stock markets in January, as investors feared its emergence could threaten current AI market leaders.

On Thursday, a group of 21 state attorneys general urged Congress to pass a bill that would ban government devices from downloading and using DeepSeek artificial intelligence software on government devices.

The move makes the United States the latest country to impose or consider bans on Chinese AI. In mid-February, South Korea’s data protection agency blocked new downloads of DeepSeek after the Chinese AI app admitted it did not comply with some of the country’s personal data protection rules.

Earlier, Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers urged Australians to be cautious when using Chinese AI models, while Italy and Taiwan (China) asked government employees not to use the DeepSeek chatbot.
