US arms companies are set to be excluded from the European Union's $165 billion defense spending initiative, a significant shift in transatlantic relations.
The exclusion would also cover weapons systems sold by a third country, the Financial Times reported on March 19, citing unnamed officials. However, the exclusion would not apply if the US signs a defense and security partnership with the EU.
If agreed by EU member states, the exclusion would also apply to arms companies from the UK and Türkiye.

Meanwhile, US President Trump has frequently said he wants Europe to take more responsibility for its own defense and meet NATO's military spending levels.
The news comes amid rapid geopolitical changes, including concerns about US policy. The US and the EU are also embroiled in a trade war over tariffs.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also recently announced a defense spending plan of up to $870 billion for the EU, viewing Russia's special military campaign in Ukraine as a sign that Moscow has greater ambitions on the continent and poses a security threat.
