According to the Axios website on August 23, three Israeli officials said that Prime Minister Netanyahu had partially accepted President Biden's request made during a phone call between the two leaders on August 21 and agreed to withdraw Israeli troops from a position on the Egypt-Gaza border.

On the same day, August 23, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that negotiations in Cairo on a ceasefire in Gaza had progressed, and confirmed that CIA Director William Burns had participated in these negotiations.

However, according to Vatican News, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied that he had agreed to withdraw troops from the border as part of a possible ceasefire with Hamas. He described media reports as “inaccurate” and stressed that Israel had not agreed to give up control of the area.

In another development, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that Hamas' Rafah Division in Gaza had been defeated and said the army was focusing on fighting Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The Washington-backed bridge proposal includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Philadelphia Corridor, a key border area between Gaza and Egypt. Netanyahu has also spoken with President Joe Biden to discuss advancing the ceasefire, but no details of the conversation have been made public.
