In an interview with The Guardian (UK) on June 7, former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the alliance's forces could directly intervene in the conflict in Ukraine if necessary.

According to Mr. Rasmussen, NATO is likely to send troops to Ukraine if member countries, including the US, do not help ensure Ukraine's security at the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius (Lithuania) taking place from July 11-12.
Mr. Rasmussen also said that if Ukraine does not achieve anything in Vilnius, the Baltic countries and Poland could form a “coalition of the willing” to support Kiev.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg affirmed that Ukraine's security is a top priority at the summit in July. However, full security guarantees will only be given to members of the bloc.
At a press conference in Brussels (Belgium) on June 7, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on the military alliance to discuss options to ensure security for Ukraine, after the Russia-Ukraine conflict comes to an end.
Secretary General Stoltenberg said that when the conflict ends, NATO will monitor to ensure that Russia does not simply move forces to prepare for another military campaign.
At the same time, he also emphasized that, according to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, NATO will only provide full security guarantees to countries that have become full members of this military alliance.
