The appetizer made from pork and spices fermented for 3-5 days is the only representative of Vietnam on the list of the world's best chili dishes.

On February 9, the world-famous culinary website Taste Atlas announced a list of the 52 best chili dishes in the world. Nem chua ranked 50th and is the only culinary representative from Vietnam.

Culinary experts say that Nem chua is “a traditional Vietnamese dish”, made from fermented and salted meat. Nem chua is usually made from minced pork mixed with shredded pork skin, spices, chili and garlic. The mixture is then wrapped in banana leaves and left to ferment for 3-5 days. Nem has a sweet, salty, spicy and sour taste, often served as an appetizer or snack, dipped in chili sauce or grilled. Nem chua is popular during the Lunar New Year in some provinces across the country such as Thanh Hoa and Dong Thap.

Asian dishes also made the list, including Chinese Chongqing lemongrass and chili chicken, Indonesian Ikan bakar grilled fish, Thai “nam phrik” chili sauce, and Thai Gaeng kiew green curry.

The Top 52 were voted by experts and diners based on criteria such as being famous, having local specialties, having special flavors and being loved by many people. The list is a suggestion for tourists who love to explore cuisine to enjoy on their upcoming trip.

Taste Altas was founded in 2015 and connects with 9,000 local restaurants, introducing more than 10,000 dishes to readers, thousands of reviews, research by culinary experts and chefs. The website aims to become a world map of traditional dishes made from local ingredients.
